Get Ready for the 2016 Boston Marathon

The History Behind One of the Biggest Marathons in Boston

Residence Inn - FenwayOnce B.A.A member John Graham had experienced the majesty and crowd spirit on the Olympic marathon, the inaugural US Olympic team manager was inspired to arrange a marathon in Boston. With the help of a businessman, several routes were considered before a distance of 24.5 miles was settled on, and on April 19, 1897 the first of what has grown to become one of the biggest marathons in Boston was held. Later in 1924, the course route was lengthened to 26 miles to conform to Olympic standards.

Between 1897 – 1968, the marathon would be held on April 19, Patriot’s Day. The only exception would be when that date fell on a Sunday where the race would be held the following day. In 1969, though, the holiday was moved to the third Monday in April and the race has been held on that day ever since.
